Job Title:                     Bad River Youth Outdoors (BRYO)-Assistant (2)

Department:                Bad River Social and Family Services

Hourly Rate:                $10.00/hr         40 hrs. /wk, 6 weeks                 Full Time-LTE

Summary: BRYO is a tribal youth paddling and watershed education program. Tribal youth participate in activities that involve canoe and kayak paddling, GPS use, and traditional Ojibwe water use and water stewardship.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities including the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Assistant will assist in preparing daily programming-instruction, logistics, clean up and debrief. Attend staff trainings-life guard training, CPR, AED, and Basic First Aid training. Coordinate and lead day to day operations of BRYO- teach paddle sports-canoeing and kayaking, cultural teachings, activities and stories, teambuilding activities, environmental education about local geology, stream and wetland ecology, flora, and fauna, and relevant issues affecting the Bad River watershed. Other activities may include; water quality monitoring and invasive species removal, traditional ceremonies with Bad River spiritual leaders, campouts, and harvesting. Oversight of safety of group at all times: during transport and during on-water and on-land activities.

  • Experience in environmental education, adventure education, place-based education, wilderness education, outdoor pursuits, or outdoor recreation.
  • Experience canoeing and kayaking on rivers and lakes
  • Ability to teach and lead as a team with assistant instructors and student leaders
  • Ability to teach and be active outdoors with no facilities for the extent of the workday
  • Ability to adapt to continually changing conditions of working and teaching in the outdoors
  • Keen cultural awareness and sensitivities about working with community members
  • Ability to work with people with diverse values and traditions
  • Open-mindedness, flexibility, and patience
  • Life guard training, CPR and First Aid Certifications-program will provide training

Educational and/or Experience

Required:

High school diploma or its equivalent.

Must be 19 years of age or older.

Other Skills and Abilities:

Required:

This is a required driver position.

Must possess a valid Wisconsin driver’s license and meet eligibility for tribal insurance.

Must maintain strict confidentiality in accordance with the Privacy Act.

Preferred skill:

Experience teaching or working with youth 14-18.

Background Check:

This position is contingent on ability to pass background check required. This position required for eligibility a Caregiver Background check regarding working with children and elderly, and required driver check, to meet eligibility for Tribal Insurance.

Language Skills:

Must be able to communicate effectively with youth, partners and community members.

Reasoning Ability:

Must be able to provide leadership and lead youth by example.

Walking and standing required. Bending, stooping, lifting, paddling, carrying a canoe or kayak and occasional lifting up to 75 pounds and/or carrying for short distance. Subject to inside and outside environmental conditions.
