Job Title:                           Environmental Specialist

Department:               Bad River Natural Resources Department

Summary: The Environmental Specialist works to identify, characterize, prevent, mitigate, and remediate sources of pollution and any activities that may adversely impact human health, tribal lands and waters, or Ojibwe Treaty Rights.  

Essential Duties and Responsibilities including the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Will analyze environmental problems and develop solutions by employing legally-sound, scientific principles in a manner respectful of the Ojibwe worldview.  

Will be responsible for developing and implementing environmental programs, ordinances, and delegated authorities to address environmental concerns for the Bad River Tribe.

Will systematically and collaboratively address issues regarding pollution prevention, recycling and solid waste disposal, alternative energy and energy conservation, Title III of SARA (as it applies to Tribes and States), NEPA, natural resource damage assessments, air quality, and other environmental issues, as necessary.

Will serve as a tribal staff contact on environmental matters between Tribal, State and Federal agencies, and will provide information and assistance to the Natural Resources Director, Tribal Chair and Tribal Council on environmental matters concerning the Bad River Tribe.

Will prepare technical reports and presentations explaining research and findings regarding environmental concerns of importance to the Bad River Tribe. This may involve providing information and guidance to government officials, private interests, or the general public.

Will be responsible for managing activities under the General Assistance Program of the Environmental Protection Agency. Also, identifying funding opportunities and preparing grant proposals, as needed.

Will conduct and provide education and outreach on environmental and sustainability issues to the Tribal Community and within the Bad River Watershed.

Will participate in the Lake Superior Partnership and Binational Program to implement the Lake Superior Lakewide Action and Management Plan (LAMP).

Will collaborate with Natural Resources staff, other tribal staff, and external organizations (as appropriate) to complete the essential duties and responsibilities as described above.

Will supervise the Air Quality Specialist and GIS Specialist.

Education and/or Experience:


Bachelor of Science degree in an environmental- or natural resource-related field (to include, biology, chemistry, ecology, geology, sustainability, etc.).

Demonstrated experience working with tribal communities and/or Native American issues.

Excellent oral and written communication skills.

Experience in program administration, including supervision of personnel, report writing, and grant management.

Experience coordinating and conducting interdisciplinary environmental studies.

Skill in operating various word-processing, spreadsheets, and database software programs in a Windows


Must be self-motivated, trustworthy, dependable, willing to travel, and work long hours occasionally.



Master’s degree strongly preferred.

Familiarity with the Ojibwe language and culture.

Familiarity with environmental law and policy.

Experience with ArcGIS, quantitative analysis, and environmental modeling.

Other Skills and Abilities:


Driving preferred

Must possess a valid driver’s license and meet eligibility for tribal insurance.

Must be able to perform moderate physical activity associated with field work.

Background Check:
