Job Title:               Fisheries Specialist

Department:         Natural Resource Department

Hourly Rate:         $16.00/hr to $20.00/hr (depending on qualifications)                  Full Time: Yes

Supervisor:           Natural Resource Manager

Summary: The Fisheries Specialist will be responsible for providing expertise in the planning and development of a fisheries program utilizing biological data, ecological knowledge, and sound management principles.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities including the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Will be responsible for administration of projects/programs related to tribal fisheries, including preparation and submission of grant/contract applications for fishery program.

Will actively investigate funding sources to maintain and build program capacity.

Will prepare and monitor program budgets, advise the Natural Resource Director of budget balances, and initiate budget modifications as necessary.

Will monitor and evaluate progress in relation to program goals and objectives defined in program contract(s).

Will submit all required program reports.

Will oversee the Bad River Fish Hatchery operation, supervise fish hatchery crew members, assist with all hatchery operations including monitoring and implementation of rearing pond techniques, and expand hatchery operations to include increased production for release and commercial sale.

Will develop and implement fisheries surveys for Kakagon Sloughs, Lake Superior, other Tribal waters, and waters of interest to the Tribe.

Will participate in state/tribal fishery management groups to determine commercial use patterns, and establish parameters for the exercise of treaty reserved fishing rights by tribal commercial fishermen.

Will plan and participate in positive public relations activities and educational services to advocate sound conservation practices among tribal and non-tribal members.

Education and/or Experience:


Bachelor’s Degree in Biology with emphasis on Fisheries/Fish Hatchery Maintenance and/or Limnology.

Two years practical experience in Hatcheries and/or Fisheries Management.

Knowledge of grant/contract administration.

Supervisory experience.



Master’s degree preferred.

Experience working with tribal communities and/or Native American issues preferred.


Other Skills and Abilities:


This is a required driver position.

Must possess a valid driver’s license and meet eligibility for tribal insurance.

Must be self-motivated, trustworthy, dependable, and willing to work long hours occasionally.


Background Check:

This position is contingent on ability to pass background check required. This position required for eligibility required driver check, to meet eligibility for Tribal Insurance.


Language Skills:

Must possess excellent oral and written communication skills. Must possess proficient computer skills.
