Job Title:                     Juvenile Justice Coordinator

Department:                Health and Wellness Center, Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse

Hourly Rate:                $18-$20/hr       Full-time: 40 hours/week

Supervisor:                  AODA Program Manager

Summary:  The Juvenile Justice Coordinator will develop a strategic plan in accordance with grant requirements in order to create a partnership with existing criminal justice programs to enact a Juvenile Healing to Wellness Court program. The Coordinator will also coordinate with the court system and Ashland School District along with the Bad River AODA program to provide interventions to youth before they are charged with serious or repeated charges. The coordinator will be responsible for assessing and providing a care plan to youth who qualify for the program and providing access to other resources and services needed. This position will require regular hours outside of the typical 8am-4:30pm Health and Wellness Center hours.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following.

  • Develop a strategic plan in accordance with the goals and objectives of the grant
  • Implement the plan in accordance with the goals and objectives of the grant
  • Develop relationships with youth, guardians, school, court system, and treatment providers
  • Monitors youth placed in healing to wellness court program
  • Advises youth of program requirements/conditions
  • Maintains records of youths’ residences, employment, or other situations
  • Acts as a case manager and coordinates with youths’ parents/caregivers to ensure compliance
  • Collects and administers urine, saliva, or breath samples for drug/alcohol testing, interprets test results and reports the results to the court
  • Reports violations of compliance and non-compliance to the courts
  • Establishes and maintains participant file until case is either terminated or completed successfully
  • Enters case information into computerized case management system
  • Monitors status of cases throughout the court process
  • Attends weekly staffing and court sessions
  • Testifies at court hearings regarding violations, policies, procedures or other issues
  • Provides weekly updates regarding participant progress to treatment provider
  • Reviews support group meeting sheets from each youth weekly to ensure proper documentation
  • Maintains log of court-imposed sanctions and ensures compliance
  • Reviews participant school attendance monthly and updates court regarding compliance
  • Communicates with other team members regarding new candidates eligibility and interest in the program
  • Identifies and maintains contact information for local resources (i.e., mental health, drug rehabilitation, employment, housing, etc.)
  • Maintain strict confidentiality according to HIPAA and FERPA and within the court system
  • Monitor truancy rates and make contact with truant students, and make referrals when necessary
  • Make necessary referrals to external resources and documents attendance, etc.
  • Works within a team and supports the AODA program through a drug and alcohol free lifestyle
  • Utilizes appropriate boundaries and professionalism while working with a diverse population
  • Attends monthly Advisory Board meeting
  • Performs other job duties as necessary

Education and/or Experience:


Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice, Social Work, Human Services or other social sciences or related field; (1) year previous experience and/or training involving law enforcement, probation, the criminal justice system, court procedures, case management and personal computer operations

Ability to type and knowledge of basic computer applications (MS Word, MS Access, MS Excel and MS Outlook), day job requirements.

This is a required driver position.

Must have a valid driver’s license and meet eligibility for tribal insurance.

Background Check:

This position is contingent on ability to pass background check required. This position for eligibility a Caregiver Background Check regarding working with children and/or elderly and required driver check, to meet eligibility for Tribal Insurance.

Language Skills:

Must possess strong written and oral communication skills, must be familiar with current GPS mobile devices and ability to read map. Ability to effectively operate both independently and as part of a professional team, knowledge of and adhere to a strict professional code of ethics, knowledge of and comply with HIPPA, ability to organize community resources in the support of youth, extensive knowledge of child and adolescent development, ability to work successfully with individuals of all ages and families from diverse communities

Reasoning Ability:

Good interpersonal skills and ability to work with individuals and families with objectivity and courtesy. Understanding of whereabouts of surrounding medical facilities preferred. Ability to deal with frequent change, delays or unexpected events. Diligent attention to detail and safety (such as observing safety and security procedures, adapting driving style to bad weather conditions, etc.)

Ability to sit for long periods of time. Must be physically able to make home visits and/or transport clients. Position requires some walking, standing, bending, stooping and occasional lifting up to 50lbs. Subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, and occasional smoking environment.

The noise level in the working environment is usually moderate. Subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, exposure to outside weather conditions and driving within the conditions of it, exposure to adverse conditions while assisting customers in and out of vehicle and occasional smoking environment. Much of these job duties will be performed between the Courthouse, Ashland School District buildings, and in program participants’ homes.

Employees of the Bad River Health and Wellness Center must abide by the Bad River Health and Wellness Center Employee Health Policy. Employees must show proof of Tdap immunization or Pertussis booster, MMR and will receive TB test if employee has not had test within 1 year upon hire.
